Story

DAY 10 HE'S DONE IT! Steve arrived in John O'Groats just after lunch, completing the journey in an amazing 9 1/2 days Steve, we're very impressed and proud of you. As I'm sure your family and all your other friends are too. Safe journey home. DAY 8 & 9 Up into the Highlands Steve goes on. after 111 miles arriving in Invergarry at the end of day 8. His Dad has now joined up with him, for which he is grateful. Into day 9 and the saddle sores are not getting any easier. Things are not helped by the challenging hills or the poor quality of the Scottish roads, described by Steve as "like riding on cobbled streets". He's feeling every bump. On one particular hill he was tempted to get off and walk. The site of 2 attractive ladies riding up with panniers on their bikes spurred him on sufficiently to get him to the top, however. After a total of 91 miles he rode into Golspie for a well earned rest. He's getting close now. Maybe just over 70 miles to go. He may finish tomorrow. DAY 7 Steve set off early and by lunch time had done 75 miles. For the very first time he has complained about some saddle soreness. However, in the afternoon he carried on to complete 122 miles in the day and reach the bottom of Loch Lomond. Today he has struggled to find suitable accommodation and stayed in a holiday complex where he described the facilities as very basic. Couldn't do a real ale of the day as they only served larger and also had to sleep with the bike. He was cheered by the news that his Dad intends to join him tomorrow and accompany him the rest of the way (In a car I think, not on a bike) DAY 6 Steve continues to power on. Another 95 miles today, he arrived in Annan in Scotland at about 4pm. He would have gone further but having to set off this morning without breakfast and the hail took its toll and he decided stop there. He's now ahead of schedule and feeling like nothing is going to stop him. He's got 1 or 2 big climbs left in the next few days so lets hope he's right. Day 5 Stew and Steve set off from Shrewsbury heading for Preston. After 12 miles, however, it was apparent that Stew's knees weren't going to allow him to go any further. He headed back to Portsmouth (on the train), feeling very sore and very low. "Apologies to all who have sponsored me, to Maz, Millie and Annie, Lucy's family, Katherine and of course Steve, all of whom I feel like I've let down. Thank you, however, for all the kind comments and support" Stew. Steve, has carried on, looking stronger and fitter than ever. He passed Preston (who can blame him) and carried on to Lancaster doing 110 miles in the day. When last heard of he was in a pub watching the England game. Tomorrow he'll be in to Scotland and over half way ! Day 4 It sounds like it has been the hardest day today: the wind was blowing right into them, Stew's knee was getting sore, and what was described as undulations turned out to be masses of hills! They rode through Hereford, and I am glad to say there were things there to remind Stew of me (namely the cider museum) and they rode through the Shropshire hills. It is Lancashire tomorrow, so Stew plans to be wearing his Leeds United shirt (of course!) Day 2 On encountering the Devon coast to coast bike ride which was taking place today, the lads ended up getting a police escort out of Okehampton, as the police thought that they were race stragglers! Stew is down one Leeds United top, as one of the riders in the race was struggling badly and obviously freezing, so he gave him the shirt...some people will do anything to get more people to support their football team! They were punished by 6.00pm tonight and finished the day in Tiverton. ------------------------------------ Lands End to John O'Groats, a total of about 950 miles. Cycling the distance are Stew Garside and Stephen Rowland who were friends of Lucy's. They intend to set off on 06th June 2009 from Lands End, Cornwall, with the aim of arriving at John O'Groats, Scotland 12 days later on 17th June 2009. To achieve this they will have to cycle about 80 miles a day. From a few drunken words spoken at Lucy's funeral, the lads have put the plan into fruition... They are REALLY doing it. So lets get behind them, and hope they get to the top of Scotland in time to catch the train home.

We're off

7th June 2009
The boys left their hometown of Southsea Friday Mid day 5th June 2009. Maz, Millie and Annie all waved them off at the train station with party poppers and Champagne. They ended up in a lovely little B&B that evening and set out bright and early from Lands end on a very wet Saturday Morning. They did their first 80 miles and got to Liskeard in the afternoon. Stew made the journey unscathed but alas Steve fell and injured his knee. But this has not detered them and they have left Liskeard this morning heading for a further 80 miles.

1 June 2009 Did my last training ride tonight when I cycled back from work. Only fell of once when I had to stop sharply at a junction and couldn't get unclipped from the pedals. Only my pride dented though and I'm sure we're going to be fine. No more riding now until we start and only some very minor last minute preparations to complete.

Packed up!

EAST HAMPSHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE

23rd May 2009
21/05/09 EHDC employee set to cycle the length of the country The memory of a friend’s tragic death has inspired an East Hampshire District Council employee to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for charity. Stewart Garside, of Southsea, will take on the mammoth 874 mile trip in honour of friend Lucy Ednie. 34-year-old Lucy, of Aldershot, died of ovarian cancer in October last year, after being married for just one year. Mr Garside, who will be taking on the task with friend Stephen Rowland, of Southsea, hopes to raise £500 for the charity Love Women, which fundraises for research into the disease. The pair plan to complete the journey, which they have named Luce Wheels, in 12 days, setting off on June 6. Mr Garside, an arboricultural officer, said: “This is important. Ovarian cancer can be cured if detected early enough. However, this does not happen often enough as there are few obvious symptoms in the early stages and they are often misinterpreted by GPs. “The charity’s aim is to raise awareness of these symptoms, but also to fund research to develop a test that would detect the disease at an early stage. Such a test is close to being available but more research is required. So the more money we can raise the better.” If you would like to donate to the charity, log-on to Mr Garside’s fund-raising page at: www.lovewomen.tributefunds.com and type Luce Wheels into the search box. Contact: Stewart Garside, East Hampshire District Council, 01730 234217.

Visited the Table Top, Cake and Plant sale at the Victoria Hall, Ash. It was great to see Peter and Marina again as well as so many of Lucy's old mates. Everyone had clearly put a lot of effort into the event and the hall looked fantastic. No wonder the sale was so successful and raised so much money for the charity. Congratulations to all involved, especially Kath, who even at 14 weeks pregnant, worked hard for many weeks getting it all together. Thank you also to all those who took the opportunity to sponsor us for our up coming bike ride (less than 3 weeks to go now). Your various comments and generosity are very encouraging. The ride home was less fun. Just under 60 miles with 20 mile an hour winds into our faces proved to be quite hard work. As always Steve appeared to find it much easier than I did, but was very good in waiting around for me and helping me through it. Hoping we don't get too many days like that on the actual ride! Stew.

9 May. More training.

10th May 2009
Portsmouth to Alton and back. 63 miles before lunch. Mainly so Stew could make it to the pub for the Leeds vs Millwall game (12:45 kick off). Few mishaps, although, not for the first time, Steve did land in a hedge near Newton Valence.

3 May 2009. Isle of Wight

10th May 2009
Along with thousands of other cyclists (See Gallery) Stew and Steve Cycle around the Isle of Wight. 66 miles of testing hills but they got round. (Actually, because there senses were a little dulled at the end, they nearly went round again)

17 April 2009 Weymouth

10th May 2009
On holiday in Weymouth with the Wells' Stew did a training session around Weymouth and Portland. They have old tram lines in the streets in the older parts of Weymouth as Stew found to his cost. The back wheel got stuck in one and flipped him off. Fortunetly, he only suffered some bruising (See Gallery).

I think they are serious

24th April 2009
Maz here...every Thursday for a few years now...Steve comes round and he and Stew eat loads and drink all the wine in the house that exists. Well imagine...last night I thought they were taking the pis**...Steve actaully said (and there was food left) I'm stuffed! Then this morning I found an almost full bottle of wine and Stew reckons that they rounded off the night about 10! They ARE really doing it!

First long haul practice (80 miles)

29th March 2009
Bright and early on a Sunday morning, the morning after the night before when England won 4 - 0 in their friendly match, Steve and Stew head off a bit worse for wear. Steve a little bit worse off advising that he may need to stop for a sick break as he'd stayed later at the pub to celebrate England's victory. He also admitted that he'd had a curry on the way home. Oh well they are off on a 80 mile trek this morning and hopefully they will return in one piece.
